The IAPB conference, Canadian section was held May 5-8 in Saskatoon. This was the 7th workshop of the Canadian IAPB. There were 136 registrants from across Canada as well as from Europe, USA, China, and the Northern Marianas Islands. There were 26 oral presentations and 28 poster presentations on the following topics:
- Cell culture: past and present
- Embryogenesis/haploidy
- Transformation: bridging tissue culture and biotechnology
- siRNA and miRNA Plant biotechnology
- Bioproducts and biotechnology
- Applications of plant biotechnology
Our keynote speakers were:
- David Dennis (Performance Plants)
- Stanton Gelvin (Purdue University)
- Sergio Ochatt (INRA-France)
- Patricia Polowick (NRC-PBI)
- Guilang Tang (U of Kentucky)
- Trevor Thorpe (U of Calgary)
- Steve Webb (Dow AgroSciences)
Our student presentation competition showed us that the future of plant biotechnology research in Canada is in good hands. Congratulations to all students who participated. The winners of the competition were as follows:
